Roland Bishop is a native Californian; born and raised in Los Angeles and Ojai, CA. He was raised with a sincere appreciation of the arts, by the fact his father owned an art gallery in Los Angeles and would frequently take Roland, when he was young, traveling throughout the Southwest in search for artifacts for the gallery. Rolands love of photography began in High School. During his junior year, he was one of ten students chosen by the California Academy of Fine Arts, to photograph the United States for its 200th Bicentennial celebration.
Roland first attended the University of California, Santa Barbara as a zoology major but soon realized photography was his passion and moved back to Los Angeles to apply and was accepted to Art Center College. Prior to starting school, Roland spent six months backpacking throughout Europe and North Africa, photographing and experiencing art history, ancient architecture and world cultures firsthand. While exploring the ruins of the Greek, Roman and Persian Empires, he found himself drawn to the more simplistic aspects of architecture and its reflection of nature. This love of simplistic, natural beauty is clearly reflected in Roland’s work. It has helped define his use of light and space to clarify his photographic compositions.
Roland chose to specialize in location photography primarily because of his love of Architecture and Design. He strongly believes that a good photographer can weave a story from a single moment in time with the proper use of lighting and composition. The goal of a good commercial photographer should be to create, in the mind of the viewer, a desire to become an integral part of the image. This requires not only technical knowledge, but also artistic vision and an innate talent.
Over the past twenty years, Roland has been privileged to work for such distinct clients including; Tropitone Furniture, Hunter Douglas Contract, Milliken Carpets, Brown Jordan, Behr Paints, Kohler, Ecore International, HDR Architecture, Interior Architects, HOK, and Gould Evans Associates. His photography has been published in many periodicals including; Interior Design, Hospitality Design, San Diego Home & Garden, Domus and Graphis.
