In a time of war and questioning values, "Abraham Lincoln
in Two Miles a Penny'" brings into focus the perspective
of one of our greatest presidents. The play is set on the steps
of The Lincoln Memorial, at Mount Rushmore, and in a parlor room
of The White House, "where I could be in my contemplative
states", wherein Lincoln recalls earlier days; as a traveling
lawyer on the eighth circuit, a river boat captain on the Sangamon
River, wrestling Jack Armstrong, serving in the Black Hawk War,
and arriving in Springfield to begin his professional career.
The time is the present; Abe Lincoln has been granted a dispensation
from "belonging to the ages" in order to address the
issue of legends that surround our remembrance of him. He recalls
his life and times with the humor and anguish one would expect
from both a masterful storyteller and the Civil War President'.
Given a cognizance beyond his own death, our most revered President
also comments on money, current events, and inventions; from ballpoint
pens to the press, power, and terrorism.
As a writer, Ed Trotta is best known to Los Angeles audiences
for his stage adaptations of "A Clockwork Orange", "Animal
Farm", Kafka's "The Trial", and Roger Corman's
'59 cult classic, "A Bucket of Blood". These premiered
at The Company of Angels, earning thirteen Dramalogue awards,
three Ovation nominations, and several Critics Pick honors. Other
original works include "Speakeasy", an interactive play
in two acts, "Forbidden Ground", and "Sherlock
Holmes in the Case of the Yuletide Puzzle". (He is also the
author of several children's' books, "Kite Flight",
"The First Autumn", and "Andrew's Unusual Birthday").
For the screen, Mr. Trotta has written "The Palace Guards",
"Hotcreek", and "Find the Andy".
As an actor, Ed Trotta's thirty two year career of Broadway,
National Tour, film, and television makes him no stranger to historical
and legendary characters. He has portrayed the title roles in
"Henry VIII", "Dracula", "Cyrano de Bergerac",
"Man of La Mancha", "Sherlock Holmes", and
"Tartuffe", as well as Joseph K. in "The Trial",
and Boswell T. Thorpe in Beth Henley's "Signature" at
The Actor's Gang Theater. "Abraham Lincoln in Two Miles A
Penny" is his first one-man show.
John Herzog, not only directs "Abraham Lincoln in Two Miles
a Penn", he is also Managing Director of The Los Angeles
Repertory Co. Best known to Los Angeles Audiences as an actor,
he has appeared in numerous productions here and in regional theatres
all over the country for the past 35 years. John was most recently
seen in the LARep production of "The Chosen" this past
fall. Other LARep productions include "Rocket to the Moon",
"The Hostage", and "King Lear". He has performed
regionally at Indiana Repertory Theatre, Delaware Theatre Co.,
Portland Stage Co., and many others. John will soon be seen starring
in the independent feature "Rogues" to be released soon.
The Los Angeles Repertory Company was founded by Robert Ellenstein
in 1966. After wandering the city without a permanent home for
over 25 years, the Rep moved to its present home base in Hollywood.
In addition to their award-winning six-actor version of "Hamlet"
in 1987 (remounted in 1988 and 1994), the Rep mounted numerous
productions at various venues including the award-winning "Assassins"
by Stephen Sondheim at LATC, Shaw's "Misalliance," "Rocket
to the Moon" (Odets), "King Lear" starring Robert
Ellenstein, and Shaw's epic "Back to Methuselah."
